In the SBS section of Volume 48 of the manga, when asked what roles each of the Straw Hat crew would have in a traditional family unit, Oda said that Franky and Robin would be the mother and father, respectively.Īlthough romance isn't the focus of One Piece and the fact that it isn't is kind of what makes it special, Oda can't seem to ignore the sparks of love between members of his pirate crew. After the events of Dressrosa, when the crew is planning with the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, you can see a panel of Franky and Robin wearing matching "Corrida" shirts, named after the coliseum. It seems like the pair are particularly close but it's only ever hinted at, rather than brought to the surface. Robin returns Franky's warm welcome with a sweet smile, remarking that he never changes, despite his new upgraded body. It's a funny moment and Robin caps it off by reminding him that pirates won't give up on a treasure in front of them without good reason.Īfter the two years of training the crew spends apart, when Robin and Franky reunite at the Sunny in Chapter #599, the cyborg refers to the archeologist as a scorching beauty, capping it off with his "SUPER" pose. After the Franky Family successfully got him back to the Sunny by stealing his speedo, Robin "convinces" the naked cyborg by using her devil fruit powers to squeeze his.family jewels. To him, Robin's existence is not a threat, and reviving ancient world-ending weapons isn't why she's finding the poneglyphs or traveling with the Straw Hats.Ĭonversely, Robin has a "role" in convincing Franky to join the Straw Hats before they depart Water 7. But Franky didn't think twice about this. Franky decides to burn them entirely meaning that, if Robin were to revive the weapons, there's no longer anything in the world that could hope to counteract them. The moment we see Franky truly understands Robin has every right to live and follow her dream is when he's holding the Pluton blueprints up to Spandam. Franky put a lot of faith and trust in Robin, despite her catastrophic reputation as the only person who can revive the ancient weapons. Rather, he saw her as a person just as anyone should have. In the train to Enies Lobby, when Robin is convinced that her being around the Straw Hats will only put them more in danger, Franky shares the words of his mentor, Tom, with her: "existence is not a crime." Even though this is their first true meeting, the shipwright didn't seem to take the notion of her being the Devil Child of Ohara at face value. Now, an argument could be made this just something Oda has taken to just recently, but other hints have been dropped here and there about how they see each other as early as the Water 7 arc.

The morbid archaeologist is open to Franky's kind gesture, only for Brook to jump in the backseat before she can, to the annoyance of Franky. In Chapter #979, Franky shows off his new "Black Rhino" Bike and offers the backseat to Robin, specifically. RELATED: With Usopp, One Piece Crafted The PERFECT UnderdogĪt first glance, this seems like simple fan shipping between the two characters closest in age, but there has been some honest hint-dropping from Oda of the two being "more than close." In the most recent of Oda's beloved color spreads, Nico Robin is cupping the side of Franky's face, an act that can't be seen as anything but flirting. WITH ADVENTURE." Yet, it seems like Oda may be leaning more into a possible romance between the Straw Hats' archaeologist and shipwright, Robin and Franky.

In Volume 34 of Oda's SBS sections where he takes fan questions, when asked if any of the crew will ever fall in love, Oda simply replied, "They're all in love. Usually, it's only ever been with characters like Sanji, Hancock and Pudding for laughs and jokes, but never anything more than that.
FRANKY'S THEME ONE PIECE SERIES
Despite One Piece's 23 year-long run exploring the meaning of adventure, freedom, dreams and growth, series creator Eiichiro Oda has hardly touched "romance" with his characters.
